Blur part of a screenshot so it cannot be undone
A soft blur can sometimes be sharpened back. WellSnap's blur never looks at what is under the box: it is built from the pixels around it, so there is nothing to recover.
Press Print Screen. The screen freezes.

How to do it
Take the screenshot
Press Print Screen and select the area.
Press B
The Blur tool is active. Drag a box over the email, the token or the face.
Pick the mode
Mosaic looks natural. For passwords, keys and card numbers, switch to a solid fill.
Copy
Press Enter. The copied picture contains the mosaic, not the original pixels.
Why this blur is safe
Most editors blur by averaging the pixels inside the box. With large text and a mild blur, that leaves enough of the shapes behind for the original to be guessed or partly restored.
WellSnap reads only a thin ring of pixels just outside the box and fills the inside with blocks made from those colors and a little noise. The content of the box never takes part, so no amount of sharpening brings it back. Two neighbouring blur boxes do not read each other either.
Mosaic or solid fill
The mosaic keeps the screenshot looking calm: a blurred email reads as a blurred email. A solid fill is a plain rectangle in the color you choose. It hides even the length of a password and is the better choice for secrets.
What to blur before you share
- Email addresses, phone numbers and names in support screenshots
- API keys, tokens, passwords and one-time codes
- Card numbers, IBANs and order totals
- Faces and avatars in chat screenshots
- Browser tabs and notifications you did not mean to show
Questions and answers
Can a WellSnap blur be reversed?
No. The pixels inside the box are never used to draw the mosaic, and the copied image is a flat picture with no layers, so the hidden part is simply not in the file.
Can I blur a screenshot I already have?
In the app, WellSnap works on what is on your screen: open the image and take a screenshot of it. For a quick one-off, the editor on our home page runs the same blur in your browser and uploads nothing.
Why is the color picker greyed out for blur?
The mosaic takes its colors from the surroundings. Switch to solid fill to choose a color.
