Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask most. Missing something? Ask on GitHub

The basics

Is WellSnap free?

Yes, completely. There is no paid tier, no trial and no ads. Every feature is available to everyone, and the source code is open under the GNU GPL 3.0.

Which systems does it run on?

Windows (64-bit) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There is no Linux version.

Which languages does the app speak?

English and Russian. It follows your system language, and you can switch in Settings, General.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to log into.

Screenshots and markup

How do I take a screenshot?

Press Print Screen on Windows or ⇧⌘2 on a Mac. The screen freezes, you drag over the area, mark it up and press Enter to copy.

Can I capture the whole screen?

Yes. After pressing Print Screen, press Ctrl+A to select the whole monitor.

Can I capture a window or a scrolling page?

Not automatically. WellSnap captures the area you select. There is no window detection and no scrolling capture.

How is WellSnap's blur different?

It is a mosaic built from the pixels around the box, never from the pixels inside it, so the hidden part cannot be sharpened back. For passwords and keys, use the solid fill.

Can I add numbers to a screenshot?

Yes. Press N and click to place callouts 1, 2, 3 with a comment for each. They renumber themselves when you delete one.

Which formats can I save?

PNG or JPG for saved files, at the full resolution of your screen. Copied screenshots are always PNG.

Sets and pasting

How do I paste several screenshots into Telegram at once?

Press Shift+Enter instead of copying, take the next screenshots, then click Copy all and press Ctrl+V in Telegram. They arrive as one album. Win+Alt+V adds your comments as the caption.

Why doesn't a plain Ctrl+V paste the comments too?

When pictures are on the clipboard, Telegram and Chromium-based apps ignore any text that comes with them. Paste with text works around it by pasting the text first and the pictures right after.

Will WellSnap send the message for me?

No. It never presses Enter or Send. You check the message and send it yourself.

Windows

Print Screen opens Snipping Tool instead of WellSnap. How do I fix it?

Open WellSnap Settings, Shortcuts, and click Give Print Screen to WellSnap. The Restore button undoes it.

Windows SmartScreen warns about the installer. Is it safe?

The installer is not code-signed yet, which is why Windows does not recognize it. The code is open on GitHub and releases are built there. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Does the installer need administrator rights?

No. WellSnap installs for your user only.

Privacy and updates

Does WellSnap upload my screenshots?

Never. Screenshots, the clipboard, comments, file names and window titles are not sent anywhere.

Then what does it send?

Crash reports and anonymous daily usage counts, such as how many screenshots were taken and which tools were used, with the app version and your country. Both can be turned off in Settings, Privacy, and nothing is sent before you finish the welcome screens.

How do updates work?

WellSnap checks GitHub for a new version, waits a day or two after it comes out, and installs it while you are away from the computer. You can turn this off in Settings, About.

Ready the next time you press Print Screen

Install takes a few seconds and needs no admin rights on Windows.
