A simpler ShareX alternative, on Windows and Mac

ShareX can do almost anything, and its settings show it. WellSnap does one job: a marked-up screenshot in a chat as fast as possible, with nothing to configure first.

Windows, 64-bitmacOS 14 Sonoma or later

  1. Press Print Screen. The screen freezes.

Open menus and tooltips stay put. Drag over the part you need.

  2. Arrows, boxes, a marker and text

One key per tool. Shift snaps arrows to 45°.

  3. Blur that cannot be undone

Built from the pixels around the box, so there is nothing to recover.

  4. Numbered callouts with comments

A click drops a number. The comment stays on the picture or goes as text.

  5. One more, and one more

Each screenshot in a set gets a letter, its callouts become A1, A2, B1.

  6. The whole set goes into a chat at once

Your comments and the pictures arrive as one message.

  7. Or as one picture

For email and tickets: all screenshots on one sheet, comments under each.

  8. Print Screen opens Snipping Tool? One click fixes it

WellSnap takes the key over, and you can give it back at any time.

  9. Quiet updates, private by design

Updates install while you are away. Screenshots never leave your computer.

Ready without setup

Install, press Print Screen, done. There are no workflows, destinations or after-capture tasks to set up first.

Built for chats

A set of screenshots pastes into Telegram as one album, and paste with text sends the comments and the pictures as one message. ShareX combines images into a file; WellSnap carries the whole set into the conversation.

Also on a Mac

ShareX is Windows only. WellSnap runs on macOS 14 and later with the same tools, so a mixed team uses one app.

Same open-source license

Both are free and GPL-3.0. WellSnap's code is on GitHub too.

When ShareX is the better choice

ShareX has OCR, scrolling capture, screen and GIF recording, window detection, automated workflows and dozens of upload destinations. WellSnap has none of these. If you rely on any of them, ShareX remains the right tool.

Switching takes a minute

  • Turn off Print Screen in ShareX's hotkey settings, or let WellSnap point you to it when the key is taken.
  • Step tool habits carry over: N places numbered callouts, and Delete renumbers the rest.
  • Your ShareX history stays where it is; WellSnap does not touch it.

Questions and answers

Can I keep ShareX for recording and use WellSnap for screenshots?

Yes. Give WellSnap the Print Screen key and keep ShareX on another shortcut. WellSnap warns you if both react to the same key.

Does WellSnap upload to Imgur or a custom server?

No. WellSnap never uploads screenshots. They go to the clipboard or a file.

Ready the next time you press Print Screen
